Maureen and Adam

Hi! We’re Maureen and Adam. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us.

Our relationship started when after we first met in Southern California while in high school. We became best friends and began dating a couple years later. We then went to college in the Bay Area, moved to the East Coast for work Philadelphia) and grad school (DC), and lived abroad for three years in Colombia and Costa Rica. In 2016, we decided to put down roots in the Pacific Northwest to be closer to our families.

So, what are we like? Maureen is someone who finds happiness in the small, silly, whimsical things in life, and sees almost any time as an opportunity for celebration. Her absolute favorite activity is swimming in the ocean, but she also gets excited about things like Ferris wheels, roller coasters, and fireworks. Adam values being a good listener and someone people can confide in and trust, but he’s never above cracking a cringey joke. Some of our favorite activities include music (live and recorded), hiking and camping, playing cards and board games, cooking, reading, watching movies and sports, gardening, and spending time with loved ones.

In our work, we share a commitment of service to others. Maureen is an immigration attorney who spent years in refugee and asylum law and now also works with accomplished clients in the arts and entertainment industry. Adam is a 5th grade teacher in a dual language immersion program where he teaches students in both Spanish and English. He has also taught middle and high school.

We love our home and community. We live within blocks of several parks, restaurants, a library, an elementary school, a farmer’s market, and community event spaces. Our ranch-style house has a big backyard with lots of trees, garden boxes, grassy space to run around, and a large deck for barbecues and get-togethers (which is great since we love to have people over). Some of our closest friends, as well as Adam’s mom, brother, and brother-in-law live within a short drive, and they all will be very active in our child’s life.

We are beyond excited to be parents and are looking forward to all of the joys and challenges of parenthood. We have always wanted to have a family through adoption, and appreciate how open adoption allows for so many people to play unique and important roles in our child’s life. With that in mind, we hope for a relationship with our child’s birth family that is rooted in mutual trust, respect, honesty, and placing our child’s well-being above all else. As parents, we will love our child unconditionally and strive every day to nurture their curiosity, sense of self, appreciation of diversity, and desire to leave the world a better place than they found it.
