Michael and Alisa
We are Michael, Alisa and Carly, or as we call ourselves #AMandCPartyofThree. We believe in authenticity, the importance of stories and that relationships matter. The more people that love a child, the better! We’ve always been drawn to adoption and have only ever wanted to expand our family in this way. We are excited to welcome another child and their birth family into our family and we hope to grow a genuine and lifelong friendship with our child’s birth parents.
We’ve been friends since middle school and after graduating from college, we realized our friendship could be much more. Michael worked up the courage to ask Alisa on a date in 2006 and everything felt natural from there. We’ve grown as individuals and as a couple since our wedding in 2010, balancing our shared strong work ethic, humor and family values. Parenting has been our greatest joy! We feel like natural parents and have seen each other become our best selves through this journey. With incredible intentionality, we have become a true team of three, but know we’re meant to be a team of four!
We were both raised in non-traditional families. Michael’s mom is an adoptee from a closed adoption. We’ve never known anything about her birth family but we wish we knew more about her roots. Alisa’s parents are divorced (and remarried), so she has full, half and step siblings. Extended family and friends are all very present in our lives. Our families are big, crazy and fun. We wouldn’t have it any other way!
In 2019, Carly and her birth family came to us through an open adoption with OA&FS. We speak to Carly’s birth mom often and see her frequently. Carly is happy and silly and loves anything related to animals or music. We spend our evenings having family dinners followed by dance parties in the kitchen and snuggles with stories at bedtime. On weekends, we regularly visit parks and trails and play with our two sweet dogs, Izzy and Dexter (both Australian Shepherds). Carly loves them – her first word was ‘dog’!
We live in a suburban neighborhood in Washington State, across the street from a large park that is perfect for regular family walks. We enjoy doing community service projects together, something we look forward to sharing with our children. We love to travel near and far, spend lots of time with friends and family, cook, shop, garden, play board games and watch Seattle sports – we are especially big Seahawks fans!
Michael is an engineer – he loves building and creating things. He played with Legos as a child, and still enjoys building with them today. He loves 3D printing helpful gadgets and fun toys for the little ones in our lives, going to playgrounds, and finding ways to inspire creativity and imagination with Carly. Michael is always ready to get down on the floor and play!
Alisa is an elementary school teacher, a local school board director, and was recently named one of Washington’s Teachers of the Year. She is an incredible people gatherer, creating themed family get-togethers for all holidays and being a supportive listener to all. She always wants to make sure visitors are comfortable and happy in our home and enjoys hosting any occasion she can. She adores quality time with Carly and Michael — doing anything from traveling to zoo trips (we have memberships to 3 zoos!).
Kindness, a desire to serve others, and compassion are all things we look forward to teaching our children. We want nothing more than for our children to have exposure to the world and opportunities that will allow for building a confident identity. We want our children to know, most of all, that they are loved, adored and treasured by both us and their birth family. Thank you for reading about us!
