Josh and Corey
Hello, we are Josh, Corey and Lyla. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about who we are. We are excited to begin the amazing journey of expanding our family through open adoption.
We met the summer of 2009, in a small, rural town in Oregon. Josh was a raft guide there and Corey and her friend were in town having a girls’ weekend. We first met at the local tavern, where Josh impressed Corey with his amazing dance moves and his unexpected chivalry. We went out on our first date and have been together ever since. Now, we are married and live in our cozy home in Portland with our sweet, spunky daughter Lyla, our fuzzy cat Gus and quirky dog Burtie. Our neighborhood is surrounded by parks, playgrounds, and cafes. In only a ten-minute drive, we can get to a river and out into nature. We take advantage of our surroundings and go outdoors as often as possible. Lyla loves being outside and would be happy to spend the entire day wandering around, throwing rocks in the water, finding sticks, and petting the neighborhood kitties. During the summer, we take Lyla swimming, camping, and hiking as much as we can.
We both always wanted kids and when we learned that we could not have children ourselves, we knew that open adoption was the right choice for us. Lyla came into our lives on April 23, 2016 through open adoption. Words can’t express how much love and joy she has brought to our lives. We are lucky to have a very close relationship with Lyla’s birth mother and her family and think of them as extended family. We are thankful that Lyla has them in her life and it’s just that many more people to shower her with love.
We both grew up in the Midwest – Corey in Ohio, and Josh in Indiana and Michigan. As much as we truly loved the freezing winters and sticky summers, we were both ready for a new adventure. After graduating from college, Corey moved to Portland and fell in love with the mountains, rivers, and laid back pace. Josh moved to Portland with some friends where he landed his first job…. as the Chuck E Cheese mascot! When Josh realized that his mascot career would only take him so far, he got a job as a cook in a popular restaurant. It didn’t take long for Josh to get hooked on Portland and he decided that this would be the place that he would put down his roots. We were both lucky to have found wonderful friends when we moved here, and we look forward to raising our family as part of a tight-knit community.
Corey works at a large non-profit that provides services for immigrant and refugee communities; she works with youth and helps them get their very first job. She loves working with people from all over the world and her laid-back personality and sense of humor help her easily connect to the youth she works with. When she’s not working, you can find Corey playing with Lyla, planning fun adventures for the family, following dog rescues on social media, dancing to kid’s music, taking the dog to the river, and eating good food. Josh is a nurse at a local hospital, and his job is a great fit for his warm, nurturing personality. He loves his job (and it doesn’t hurt that he only works three days a week). In Josh’s days off, you can find him cooking a good meal, doing a house project, working in the yard, watching football, teaching Lyla how to garden and taking her on hikes.
We are eager to add to our family and have plenty of love to give. Lyla has just learned the words “brother” and “sister” and is as excited as we are to welcome this addition to our family and become a big sister. Open adoption has been such an amazing experience for us and we look forward to beginning this journey once again. Although we do not know what the future holds, we do know that we will welcome our open adoption relationship with warmth and respect.
Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and learn about us, we wish you all the best.
