Kata and Kalei

Aloha,

We are Kata and Kalei and we have been in a loving, committed relationship for over 16 years. We met
in Seattle where Kata was working at a domestic violence program, and Kalei was attending graduate school. In 1997 we moved to and now live in Hawaii, where Kalei was born and raised. We are both trained as social workers. Kata is now a program administrator for a community agency and Kalei is a college professor.

We live in a comfortable three-bedroom home with views of the ocean and mountains, where we see morning rainbows and afternoon sunsets every day. We have a fenced yard in which our 1-1/2 year old Golden Retriever, Nazy loves to chase tennis balls and play in her wading pool that she’ll be happy to share with her new brother or sister. Kalei finds great enjoyment working in the yard, and is looking forward to filling it with a swing set, toys, and hours of family games! We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and take advantage of being outdoors as much as possible. We go to the beach and hike mountain trails with Nazy every weekend, and barbecue on the backyard grill a few times a week.

Kata is a fantastic baker, and is called on to make cakes, cookies and her famous dessert, “Hello Dollies” for office parties, family dinners, and upon request, just for Kalei. Kata reads almost one book a week, science fiction and fantasy among her favorites. Kata is one of the best “social event” planners for children and adults who visit our home. She has a whole chest of paints, colored paper and other supplies that she works into craft activities whenever children are around, and most importantly she knows how to throw a great party.

Kalei loves music, plays the ukulele, sings pretty much all the time from when she wakes until she goes to sleep at night, and remembers songs from almost any word you can think of (Kata has tested her!). She is one of those people that children are always attracted to – it must be because she has such fun energy and may be a little like a kid herself! Kalei keeps up with popular culture (like the latest movies and news), taught all of our dogs how to ring a bell to go in/out of the house, and is responsible for “fixing” little things around the house like broken clocks and running toilet

We talked about the importance of children and families almost from the day we met. We were very excited when we learned about open adoption because it means our children will always know who they are and everyone who is part of their “family.”  We deeply value our individual ancestries, and unconditionally believe in the concept of open adoption because our child will also have their own heritage to join with ours. We welcome you into our lives, and look forward to building `ohana (the Hawaiian word for “family”) together.
