Karen and Scott

We are Karen and Scott, 5’2” and 6’4”. Karen likes climbing mountains, baking bread and dance classes. Scott likes riding bikes, fried egg sandwiches and playing trumpet. We’ve been together for six years, married for three of those, and over that time we’ve made a great life together. We have a cozy home, two sweet cats (Olive and Gala), and rewarding careers. Scott works for the city as a civil engineer and Karen consults with environmental organizations on communications and campaign strategy. But we’ve always wanted to be parents and that path hasn’t been so simple.

Even before we understood our infertility issues, we considered adoption as an option for expanding our family. When adoption became the clear choice, open adoption appealed to us as best for our future child, best for his or her birth parents, and ultimately, best for us. Over the years, we have become very close to the children of our friends and family members and they are a huge part of our lives. We vacation with them, take care of them when their parents are gone, are godparents to them, and love and support a great community of kids. Now, we are ready to extend our own family.

A little more about us: Scott grew up in Iowa, youngest of three children. After finishing engineering school, he moved west to see the mountains and the ocean and loved it so much he stayed. He’s an avid cyclist, loves snowboarding and plays trumpet in several bands. Scott has an easy-going, Midwestern sensibility and makes friends everywhere he goes (in the line at the grocery store, on the train...he’s on a first-name basis with the baristas at all of the coffee shops he frequents). He’s got good comic timing and isn’t afraid to be goofy. If you need someone to cheer you up at the end of a tough day, Scott’s your guy. Karen grew up in the Northwest, and comes from a posse of half and step siblings, all of whom she loves fiercely. She’s studied many kinds of dance, spends her spare time print-making, gardening and playing her fiddle, and loves to be outside. Karen’s a voracious reader and a good cook. She is sometimes shy, but also a bit of a performer and has a great big laugh. She likes to say, “You know what I love?” and then fills in the rest of the sentence with “tulips” or “rubber boots” or “toast” or whatever happens to be making her happy in the moment. We both enjoy traveling and between the two of us have lived in or visited more than a dozen countries. We look forward to continuing our travels with our child and introducing him or her to new places and new cultures.

We live in a very ethnically diverse neighborhood, close to shops, cafes, restaurants, parks and many of our friends and their kids. We often commute to work on our bikes. Our house is a three bedroom, hundred year-old bungalow, full of artwork by Karen and other artist friends, and antiques handed down from parents and grandparents. Our basement is stuffed with bicycles and camping equipment. In the summer, much of the food we eat comes straight from our garden.

We’ve been thinking and hoping and dreaming of bringing a child into our family for a long time. We know that you’re making some important decisions right now, and if you want to consider us as adoptive parents for your child, we promise to provide a happy home, lots of opportunity and unconditional love and support. We also commit to making sure you are part of his or her life. We’d love to learn more about you and let you know more about us.
