Josh and Johnathon
Aloha!
We are Johnathon (on the right) and Josh (on the left), and we want to thank you for reading our letter. We celebrated ten years together in 2011 by getting married in a Washington D.C. garden, surrounded by our family and friends. We are excited to become parents, and we can’t wait to welcome a child and his or her birthparents into our family!
Johnathon is a fun-loving, gentle guy who has always dreamed of being a dad. He’s an adventurous sort who loves to add a bit of whimsy to life. And secretly (well, not really that secretly), he’s a bit of a sci-fi nerd! He’s also happy staying at home, working on projects around the house and garden. So far he has constructed a compost bin, fish pond, trellis, and raised veggie garden. He’s excited to begin his next project—the nursery! He was born in Melbourne, Australia and moved to the US in 1994 to work as a travel nurse. He worked for years caring for sick children, and he is now the head nurse at a busy gastroenterology clinic.
Josh is originally from Virginia. His more serious demeanor complements Johnathon’s light-hearted approach to life. He is an infectious disease physician, and he loves taking care of patients and training resident doctors. He values education, and he can’t wait to become a teacher to our children, too. He looks forward to going to parks, museums, and shows with the kids. He’s always wanted to visit Sea Life Park in Honolulu, but he hasn’t had anyone to take! He plans to fill the home with books and can’t wait to read bedtime stories.
We met in Seattle in 2001, where we were in the same running club, and we moved to Hawai‘i in 2007. We live in a three-bedroom home on a quiet, kid-friendly street. Our property borders a wetland, and our back yard is frequented by wild ducks and chickens who wander in each morning for breakfast. If Johnathon sleeps in a bit and doesn’t feed them, he will be loudly awakened by their “alarm quack!” We have fruit trees that produce mangos, bananas, limes and papaya. Our favorite time of the day is evening, when we eat dinner together on our deck with the sun setting behind the Ko‘olau Mountains.
We love living in Hawai’i, and we stay busy exploring the islands. On weekends you’ll find us hiking the mountain trails or strolling on the beach with our dogs (three miniature dachshunds named Wiggy, Abby and Bandera, and our shepherd mix, Alie). We also love running, biking, and traveling, and we can’t wait to wander the world with our child. We have strong ties with the Pacific Northwest, and we plan to return to visit often.
Our parents taught us their values of honesty, integrity, self-reliance, respect, and compassion for all. We plan to provide our children with the same strong foundation. We will nurture their interests and encourage them to be themselves. Most importantly, our children will know what it means to be loved by us and by their birthparents. We can’t wait to begin this journey with you!
