Catherine and Rov

Hello!  We’re Rov and Catherine.  Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and learn more about us.

We met 13 years ago in the college library and have been inseparable ever since.  In 2003, we married in front of our closest friends and family on a white, sandy beach in Maui.  So, you can say we got “Maui-ed in Maui!”

We are an active couple who enjoys living in the Pacific NW.  In the summer, you will find us outdoors, on our bikes, or on the golf course (Catherine likes to drive the cart).  In the winter, you will find us shredding powder on our snowboards.  Our travels have taken us to Europe and Asia, as well all over the U.S. and Pacific NW.

While we have many things in common, we are also unique in our own ways.  Rov focuses on the details, while Catherine likes to look at the big picture.  Rov is the “numbers” guy (he is a commercial banker), while Catherine is the creative one (she is an attorney).  Rov likes to sleep in during vacations, while Catherine likes to get up early to see as many sights as possible.  And Rov is a die-hard Seahawks and Huskies fan, while Catherine roots for the Washington Redskins and WSU Cougars.  We feel our strengths and differences will serve us well as balanced parents.  While we have challenging careers, balancing our work with the responsibilities of our family will be the highest priority.  We are fortunate that our jobs provide the flexibility we will need as new parents.

We envision including a child in our interests, as well as nurturing his or her own talents and dreams.  We hope that he or she will share in our love of adventure and travel, respect of family, and appreciation of learning and education.  But most of all, we picture a home full of unconditional love, support, lots of laughter, and acceptance.

As second-generation Asian Americans, we appreciate our diverse backgrounds and traditions and hope to expose our child to our Filipino (Rov) and Vietnamese (Catherine) cultures, but we will also ensure that he or she feels equally comfortable in his or her birth culture.

Our families are very supportive of us as we pursue open adoption.  We are lucky to have both families living nearby.  We are the proud uncle and auntie to one nephew and two nieces.  We’re excited to introduce them to a new cousin and we can’t wait to plan future play dates.  Our dog, Princy, rescued three years ago is also part of the family.  We think he is very happy in his “fur-ever” home.

We are excited about starting our family through open adoption and building a relationship with you.  One of the things we realized about this journey is that each person has a unique and special path in life.  For us, our path to becoming parents is through open adoption.  We feel that open adoption works for us because it focuses on the child’s best interests and takes away the confusion and questions that may be present in closed adoptions.  We love that there are so many people to love and support this child.

While we can never fully understand what you and your family are going through, we truly wish you peace through this process.  Thank you for considering open adoption and for considering us as adoptive parents.

Sincerely,

Catherine & Rov
