Placements
- OA&FS completed 42 adoptions in the 06-07 fiscal year. The agency places 40 to 60 children each year.
- Six (14%) were identified adoptions, when adoptive parents find birthparents through their own networks and bring them into the agency process.
- Nine (21%) were last-minute placements, when the birthmother contacts the agency for the first time from the hospital.
- Adoptive parents and birthparents agreed to an average of three visits per year.
Children
- 90% were newborn at the time of placement.
- 45% were Caucasian, 43% of mixed ethnicity, 10% African American, and 2% Hispanic.
- 43% experienced no prenatal drug or alcohol exposure, 26% “mild” exposure, 17% “moderate” exposure and 14% “severe” exposure.
Birthparents
- Birthmothers received counseling for an average of 8 weeks prior to placement.
- Birthmothers were 15 to 43 years old, with an average age of 24. Birthfathers were 15 to 45 years old, with an average age of 26.
- The most common referral sources were social workers, OA&FS website and yellow pages.
Adoptive Parents
- Adoptive parents waited an average of 11 months before adopting. 58% of families waited 11 months or less and 42% waited longer than 11 months. The longest wait was 39 months and the shortest wait was two weeks. (Please note that these statistics are for families who have adopted and do not include families still waiting in the pool.)
- Adoptive parents ranged from 27 to 50 years old, with an average age of 39.
- Adoptive parents incurred pregnancy-related expenses in 52% of cases, at an average of $869. There were zero pregnancy-related expenses in 48% of cases.
Same-Sex Couples
- Fourteen same-sex couples adopted last year. That’s 33% of the total placements in the 06-07 fiscal year.
- Same-sex couples’ average wait was 13 months, compared to an all-client average of 11 months.
- Seventy same-sex couples have adopted in the history of the agency.
Single People
- Fifteen single people have adopted in the history of the agency.
Disruptions
- Four (9.5%) mediations disrupted, meaning birthparents changed their minds after the baby was born but before consents were taken.
