Kathy and Brad

Dear Expectant Parent(s),

We are Brad and Kathy. As adoptive parents, our journey has been filled with longing and hope, and we eagerly await the time when we will be given the honor of parenting. We are less familiar with what a birthparent’s journey is like, and we look forward to learning from you and offering our support as you face what we imagine is a difficult decision.

Our love of animals brought us together in 2002 when we met while volunteering at an animal shelter. After attending the Nutcracker with some friends from the shelter, we were fortuitously abandoned and left to our own devices. A quick drink turned into dinner and hours of engaging conversation. Our connection and values brought us together, and a sense of humor and a give-and-take attitude have helped us build a wonderful life. A year-and-a-half after that first date we were married. We felt blessed to unite our families, both of whom share their unconditional love and support for us and the family we hope to build.

Brad comes from a tight-knit Midwestern family. His relationships with his parents and his anti-establishment older brother couldn’t have given him a more loving foundation. Just days after graduating from college he packed up and accepted a job on the West coast to follow his dream of becoming a software engineer. He hasn’t looked back since! He played French horn, piano, and bass guitar in his youth, and these days he still loves to see live music whenever he can, whether it’s local rock gigs or the symphony.

An only child, Kathy developed a close relationship with her parents and grew up surrounded by cousins and friends. In college she became fascinated by anthropology, and especially how culture and geography affect the foods we choose to eat. She is an avid reader and always has a stack (or a mountain!) of books beside her bed. She still volunteers part-time at a local animal shelter, helping to find homes for rescued animals. When she’s home, she loves tending to our organic backyard garden. She feels incredibly grateful that she will be able to be a stay-at-home parent when the time comes.

We live in a family-friendly suburban neighborhood in the Pacific Northwest with our four rescued cats—Madeline, Paddington, Beatrice and Val. We enjoy taking long walks around our neighborhood and spending time together at home, whether we’re cooking, listening to music, playing board games, or watching movies. We love having deep conversations and enjoy the sound of each other’s laughter.

We can’t wait to become parents and to surround a child with love, happiness, and security. We hope to instill in our children a love of learning, as well as a sense that being a member of a community requires involvement and care for others. We will offer them opportunities to try new things and will nurture whatever interests they develop. We are deeply committed to building an open, caring relationship with you, and we will work hard to ensure that you are an important part of your child’s life and of ours.

We wish you all the best as you make this decision for yourself and your child.

Sincerely,

Kathy & Brad
