Joni and Jonas

Joni and Jonas

Hello!

Thank you for taking the time to read our letter. We honor your courage in choosing open adoption.

We are Jonas and Joni. We are in our mid 30’s (yes, we still get carded!) and have been together for over 6 years. Our relationship developed in stages. We were co-workers first, then friends, and finally partners. We grew up in different places with different cultures. Jonas is from the city of Los Angeles and Joni grew up on a small farm in Eastern Washington. Jonas studied Math and Joni studied English. Jonas is a software engineer and Joni is a technical writer and getting her Masters in Fine Arts degree in creative writing. But in our relationship we’ve found that our similarities bring us together and our differences keep things interesting. We both love to spend time in the sun. Any chance we get, we head to the beach, whether it’s the Oregon Coast or Hawaii. A day on the beach with a good book is our idea of heaven. On any given weekend, Jonas can be found writing software code or fixing up his computer, and Joni can be found reading and writing poetry. We are both lucky to be able to work from home in our professions.

We live in an amazing urban neighborhood in the Pacific Northwest. Last summer we led a project to build a pea-patch garden in our neighborhood. It was a great way to meet our neighbors and to get everyone excited about growing healthy, organic food. Jonas loves to cook, and makes great Filipino food with recipes from his childhood.

Our families support us here in Washington as well as in California. Joni's mom is a former grade-school teacher, and will help provide childcare. Joni's dad and stepmom live only a mile away. We visit Jonas' family in California three or four times a year, and usually spend the holidays with them. We have a new little nephew who keeps reminding us of how much we can’t wait to be parents!

We hope to carry on in the tradition of our families by fostering in our children a love for education and learning, an appreciation for the arts, a respect for the environment and an open acceptance of all the wonderful things that make people unique. We can’t wait to see what hidden talents and gifts our child has and nurture those ambitions.

After trying for several years to conceive, we decided to adopt rather than go through more invasive fertility procedures. Open adoption was the only option in our minds. We love the idea of having everything out in the open with less confusion for the child about where they came from and who they look like. We are committed to maintaining an open relationship with the birth family and a connection to our child’s heritage.

Again, thank you for taking the time to read our letter. We wish you all the best in your journey.

Sincerely,

Joni and Jonas
