Heather and Justin

Dear Birthparents:

Hello from Heather and Justin. Thank you for taking time to get to know a little bit about us.

We have been together for 6 years, and just celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary. We met while watching a baseball playoff game on TV with friends. Justin proposed during a cross-country ski trip a year later, surprising Heather with a beautiful engagement ring after she fell down at the bottom of a hill. (Justin made sure to have the ring insured first in case he dropped it in the snow when he proposed!)

Heather is outgoing, energetic, and warm, and she keeps Justin from taking himself too seriously. She likes adventure travel in foreign countries, home improvement projects, and photography. Heather especially enjoys photographing mountains, Buddhist statues, and local children in the various countries we’ve visited. Justin always buys a local musical instrument on our trips (even though he doesn’t know how to play them). Justin is quiet, thoughtful, and has a dry sense of humor that keeps everyone laughing. In addition to traveling with Heather, Justin enjoys hiking and music. He plays violin, piano and guitar, and most recently was the fiddler in a bluegrass band. Justin’s anniversary present for Heather last year was to learn a favorite piano tune, which Heather had him play over and over again until his fingers were too tired to play anymore.

When we aren’t traveling, we spend a lot of time at our cabin in the mountains. The cabin sits in a beautiful location at the base of a mountain, surrounded by apple and pear orchards. It was run-down when we bought it, so it took several years to repair and rebuild. It is now finished (finally!), and we go there once or twice a month to relax and play, usually with family or friends. We go skiing and hiking nearby, but mostly we like to relax and read when we’re there.

The other member of our family is our dog, Herbie. We got him from a no-kill shelter 4 years ago. Herbie is very affectionate and spoiled – he sleeps on our bed, and Justin buys him new chew-toys all the time. Herbie’s favorite toy right now is a tennis ball that he carefully chewed the cover off of and carries with him everywhere.

We both have close relationships with our extended families, and we spend lots of time at family activities, like going to birthdays or shopping with Heather’s 82-year-old grandmother. We have 12 nieces and nephews, all under 8 years old, and we play with the kids every chance we get. In Justin’s family, the adults like to play cards while the kids play and do craft projects. Heather’s family will talk politics and read when they get together. Both families already have experience with adopting, and are eager to add another little one!

Our work lives are very similar – we are both attorneys at small law firms that happen to be located in the same office building. Our firms are flexible and family-friendly, and we both plan to reduce our work hours when we have a child so that we can share our child’s upbringing and activities.

We are excited to add the joy of a new child to our family, and to share our values and our love with him or her. We believe that open adoption can best meet the needs of an adopted child by giving them plenty of support and security. We deeply appreciate that your situation is a difficult one. We look forward to getting to know you and supporting you so that you are confident in making the best possible decision for you and your child at this time.
