David and David

David and David

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Even though we share the same name, we are as dissimilar as any two people can be: David G is a dreamer, an optimist, a fun-loving spirit who plunges headfirst into whatever joys and challenges life presents—qualities that serve him well as a Regional Director of Sales for a health benefits company. David D is a physician: reserved, quiet, a planner who wants to understand the intricacies and consequences of each action. But together, we are greater than the sum of our parts. David G brings adventure, David D, structure. David G views our home life as an endless stream of weekend projects. He even finishes some. David D considers our home a retreat and a safe haven from the hustle and bustle of life in the Pacific Northwest. Together we have aspired to an existence that capitalizes on the simple pleasures which we believe are the best this life has to offer—spending time with our family, our friends and our two beagles, remaining active and healthy, splitting our time between our home in the city, and our place on the coast.

Our decision to parent a child is one that stretches back to our very first encounter—although we didn’t at first know how or when, we have always known we would raise a family together. We are both committed to a strong belief that having ties to a new generation, and opening our hearts to a new member of our family, is a vital part of the process of living life to the fullest. What better experience to teach us to look out for our fellow human beings, to learn to look at our world with new eyes, than to share our love and experience with our children?

The most important factor in raising our family is our commitment to each other and to you. We will strive to create a safe, loving and supportive environment that emphasizes the importance and uniqueness of each individual, and recognizes the contributions of birthparent and adoptive parents alike: Dave G will make sure that she or he can look forward to the “Turkey Bowl” game on Thanksgiving, that our kids learn to drive, surf, ski, swim, and will nurture the drive to pursue whatever experiences and wherever their inclinations take them. David D will make sure that the science fair projects get done, that the immunizations happen on time, and that our family samples and appreciates art, music, travel and a range of different cultures.

We want for our children to be exposed to all that this life has to offer, and to have the experiences that will allow them to grow into the successful, confident and happy adults that are inside them. Whether it is travel, art, football, music, dance or school, we hope our kids will have the chance to see and experience this world on their terms. We are committed to creating a hopeful, safe and encouraging environment for our children to grow in, and from which they can venture out to experience the world. We believe in the potential of every human spirit, and the importance of exposing children to the widest variety of experiences possible. And with support, and the uniqueness that comes with every human life, we believe that our children will grow into the happy, confident and successful individuals that are inside them, whether that means running a Fortune 500 company or working in a bike repair shop: happy people-regardless of circumstance-are truly successful people.

Parenting our first child will be something that no amount of research, no number of parenting books, and no previous emotional watermarks can prepare us for. This is our last and greatest adventure, and we anticipate, and welcome, it taking the rest of our lives.
