Alice and Todd
Hello,
Thank you very much for taking a moment to read our letter and find out more about us.
Our names are Alice and Todd and we have been best friends for more than 17 years. We first met and began dating in college. After graduation, we ventured out west together and got married several years later. Our relationship is based on respect, love, adventure, spontaneity, and a sense of fun. We feel lucky to have each other, and are excited to share our life with a child. We have always wanted to adopt, and when we learned about open adoption it seemed to fit our philosophy of how we wanted to raise a family. We have a number of friends and relatives who have adopted and are very much looking forward to this expansion of our family. We appreciate the honest, caring, and child-centered nature of the open adoption process. We want to raise our family in an open and loving environment – and one that is full of adventure, fun, silliness, and creativity.
We live in a beautiful town which has a rural character, but which is very close to a large city in the Pacific Northwest. Our home is comfortable (and is ruled by a mischievous cat named Blaze). Our yard is fun to play in, with trees, a small stream, and a garden where we grow fruits and vegetables in the summer. We live in a fun neighborhood where we know almost all of our neighbors. We often get together with them for bonfires or cook-outs. There are trails through the forest nearby, so that we can walk down to the beach. Our town is very kid-friendly, with lots of parks, great schools, a strong arts community, and many sport leagues.
Alice is an attorney. She loves her work. She is also involved with many non-profits and enjoys making her community a better place. Todd loves her adventurous, self-assured, and calm nature – and her ability to take charge in a crisis! Alice loves Todd’s creativity and how he makes her laugh with his puns and silly songs. Todd is a teacher who has the good fortune to be able to work and live in the same town. Although he loves seeing his students and their parents in the grocery store, he can hardly wait to take time off from teaching to be a stay at home dad.
We love adventure – whether it involves traveling to far-off places or just going for walks outside. We enjoy gardening, camping, hiking, sea kayaking, fishing and skiing. We also love traveling to new and exciting places. We often go to the northeast to visit Todd’s family, or to the southwest to visit Alice’s parents. When we are at home we both enjoy reading and playing games, or cooking together in the kitchen. We are also both active in our local theater community. Alice works on the more technical side of things, while Todd acts and directs. Both of us are also members of a local improv comedy group. We are looking forward to having a child with whom we can share this creativity.
Although our parents, siblings and their families live across the country, Todd’s aunt and cousins and their families live only an hour away. We like to create our own community with our many close friends – our own “family” – around us, and we don’t define our family as those who are blood relatives. Thanksgiving at our house usually involves twenty or more family, friends and neighbors. We like to surround ourselves with people who are different from us – in age, in background, in goals, in talents – because we believe that our lives are enriched by those around us. That is why staying connected to our child’s birthparents makes so much sense to us.
Together we look forward to sharing our love and our world with a child. We know that parenting will not always be easy, but we have never found that the easy things are worth as much to us. All in all, we know this will be an adventure. We look forward to meeting you and sharing future adventures with you.
