Poem for Paul

The choices you have made
haven’t been great
but no matter what
I love you.
Smoker’s cough, gravelly voice
but it’s OK
because
I love you.
You talk a lot on the phone.
Half the time I wander off
into my own little world
inside my head
but that’s OK because
I will always love you.

Jamie, age 14 Jamie and birth sister Christine were placed with their adoptive parents Susan and Erik through Open Adoption & Family Services in the 1990s. They have two other birth siblings in adoptive families that they see regularly. Jamie often talks on the phone with her birthfather, Paul.
