OA&FS Prospective Adoptive Families - Dear Birthparents Letter
From Sarah & Melissa
Dear Birth Parent(s),
We’re Melissa (on the left) and Sarah (on the right), and we hope that you are as filled with hope at the prospect of an open adoption as we are. We salute your bravery and honor your decision to walk down the road ahead.
We’ve been together for four years and recently celebrated our first wedding anniversary. We recognize that we aren't the standard family model, but we trust that those who know us can see two people who deeply love each other, are fully committed to one another and who delight at the idea of having a child together. Is there really any better definition of the word "family"?
Home for us is located in a quiet, kid-friendly neighborhood outside of Portland. Our house is always a flurry of fuzzy energy, fueled by our two dogs Sam and Bailey, and their older, often-tormented brother Tigger the cat. We have a fabulous circle of friends and adopted family here in Portland that are a huge part of our lives and are so excited about becoming aunts and uncles!
The average weekend would find us doing any number of things. Melissa is definitely the more adventurous (not to mention more coordinated) of the two of us. She loves the outdoors, camping, video games and just about any type of sport. On her list of things to do in this lifetime, her top two are to visit Fenway Park for a Red Sox game and to ride The Magnum at Cedar Park, Illinois, home of the world’s top 5 roller coasters. Sarah is Melissa's "little Iron Chef" – she is a professional chef and practices on friends and family at every opportunity. Our friends call her Martha Stewart because she is not only a fabulous cook but loves to entertain, paint, sing and play her guitar. Now you see why our camping trips are such a blast – Melissa coordinates all the activities, Sarah does the meals and at night comes the sing along by the campfire. Gourmet S'mores, anyone?
When we join the working world, our jobs are fairly similar. Sarah is in management for the phone company, where she’s been for eight years, and Melissa works for the Regional Vice President of a major office supply company. We also own a small catering business that has steadily grown over the past year. Our goal is that Sarah can leave her office job and concentrate solely on catering very soon. We're both looking forward to the day when Sarah can stay at home with the kids and run the business from there.
We knew very early on in our relationship that we wanted children together. We feel that we can offer a home full of love, understanding and honesty. Our children will be free to be fully themselves and we will strive to support them in every endeavor. We also value the open adoption process, having closed adoptions in both of our families. We look forward to welcoming you as an integral part of our new family. Birthdays, holidays, barbeques or play time in the park, you are welcome anywhere we are.
Joy and peace to you as you make such an important decision. Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about us – we are excited to get to know you as well!
