OA&FS Prospective Adoptive Families - Dear Birthparents Letter

From David & Jim

Dear Birth Parent(s),
We're David and Jim. We live in a great city in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. We are surrounded by friends and family, have fun jobs, and are very active. We have a wonderful dog and three pet chickens (yes, chickens). In short, we can’t complain about much. However, something is missing. More on that, later.

Right now, we are almost done building our new home, which we designed with a child in mind. There is a back yard to run and play, a kid's room with a separate kid-sized play area, and a big kitchen to cook for family and friends. Our neighborhood has the convenience of city living, yet a friendly, small town feel. The neighborhood children like to come by to visit Wally and the chickens, or see how the house is coming along. We like to play ball in the nearby parks. A few blocks away there is even a zoo! One of our favorite neighborhood activities is gathering friends and their kids together to eat Sunday breakfast at the local senior center.

On the weekends, we often head to our cabin on a nearby island. It sits under a canopy of big trees right on the beach. It's a great place to play fetch with our dog Wally, hike through the woods, cycle along the country roads, or just relax by the fireplace. If we are lucky, the local deer will come for a visit or we will see a bald eagle, seals, or even a whale.

We both have interesting, creative jobs. David is an architect who has worked on buildings such as schools, hospitals, and libraries. Right now, he is working with the city's fire department to build new fire stations. Jim works for a software company that makes software for health care companies and biotechs. He works with many interesting scientists and computer geeks. We both have flexible work schedules that would allow us to spend a lot of time with a child.

We are active in other areas, too. Jim just completed a master's degree in business. He also likes to lift weights, run, read and play video games. One of these days, he will finish taking flying lessons. David is active in politics and the local chapter of the national architect's association. He also likes to swim, paint and cook. Together, we love to travel, scuba dive, build things, and volunteer in the community.

As we said earlier, something is not yet complete in our lives. It is growing our family and sharing our lives with a child. We have both wanted to be parents long before we met. Now, after nine years together, the time is right. We want to raise a child in an environment of love, adventure, learning, and endless opportunity – all with a focus on the best interests of the child.

After looking into many adoption options, we feel an open adoption best values the child's interests. A child needs as many loving, supportive people in his or her world as possible. We feel an open adoption encourages this by giving the birth family and us the ability to maintain an ongoing relationship, and giving everyone the chance to be part of the child's life. In closing, thank you for also considering an open adoption and for taking the time to read our letter.

Best Regards,

David & Jim
