OA&FS Prospective Adoptive Families - Dear Birthparents Letter
From Terry and Kirsty
Dear Birthparent(s):
Hey there! Our names are Terry (left) and Kirsty. We have been together for 16 years, and have known from the start that we wanted to raise children. We currently enjoy the role of aunt -- both as "official" aunts to our 10 nieces and nephews, and unofficial aunts to the children of friends, neighbors, and people at our church.
Being aunts has provided us with the excuse to collect (and play with) kid stuff for years -- this is Kirsty's excuse for purchasing many of the classic Walt Disney movies when they are released, and Terry's excuse for purchasing childrens books. Then there are the more practical, day-to-day, kid necessities: bubbles, kites, coloring books, puzzles, and sponge rocket launchers. Of course it is not sufficient to have these at our home; we also keep a supply at church for playing with the kids after Sunday services. Though most of these "necessities" cost under $2 each, Kirsty does her best to make them last -- even wading in Lake Michigan in April (brrr!!!) to retrieve a plastic Dora-the-Explorer kite for our friend's daughter; however she did refuse to climb up the 20 foot spire that sits atop our 50 foot church to retrieve a $1.50 water rocket. For now we enjoy doing these things with the various children in our lives, but look forward to having our own children join in the fun.
We met in graduate school 17 years ago, and have been living in Michigan for the last 10 years. We both love to teach and are lucky to have jobs in the same university and the same department, about 5 miles from where we live. Kirsty teaches mathematics, mostly to liberal arts students and engineering majors; Terry teaches mathematics and methods of teaching mathematics, to students who want to be elementary school teachers. We live in a Cape-Cod style house in a very kid-friendly neighborhood. During the summer we frequently have backyard parties with the neighbors -- we barbeque, play volleyball and badmitton (in our yard), jump on the trampoline (in our neighbor's yard) or sit by the fire and roast marshmallows (also in our neighbor's yard). We so enjoy our yard and our neighbors that we think we will just renovate our house if our family size ever gets too big for the current structure.
We cannot imagine what you must be going through as you try to decide what is best for you and your child. We hope that we get the opportunity to meet you and see if we can navigate through the joys and challenges of open adoption together. Although we live in Michigan, we love to travel and are committed to working with you to come up with an open adoption plan.
